Just like everything else in life, it is what you make of it. I would keep an open mind about Los Angeles. People live here for years before finding where they fit in this crazy collection of neighborhoods. You have Topanga, Hollywood, Culver City, Koreatown, Santa Monica, Marina Del Rey… all very different places. Brentwood is very different than the valley. Los Feliz is very different than South Bay. It's a collection of vastly different neighborhoods with vastly different cultures. Keep in mind that LA is an incredibly diverse place. But you're making a difficult career path that much harder by doing so. Someone wants to buy or option your script? Come in for a meeting. Someone wants to develop your script? Come in for a meeting. Someone likes your script? Come in for a meeting. It's where the agents are, the executives are, the producers, directors, actors… Los Angeles is not for everyone, but Los Angeles is where film development happens. And if you didn't like NoHo (which is great, in my opinion - if you live near the Arts district, then you can walk to a bunch of great bars, restaurants, venues, the movie theater, the metro station, etc.) there are so many other places in and around LA to live and they are all so very different.īut more importantly, you gotta go where you have the best chance of getting work as a screenwriter and the answer to that is LOS ANGELES. You only gave it a few weeks, and your complaints don't seem to be the kind of things that would trump, in your own words - way more opportunities and more connections.īoth of which are kind of essential. I was on the 46th floor and I could still hear that constant drone of traffic.) And obviously a lot less work for writers. Heat is much worse, weather is much worse, pollution is much worse (noise pollution especially - the constant roar of the city takes getting used to even if you're living high up. And if you're thinking about NYC, Jesus fuck are you in for a surprise. Pollution? How can that affect you in any way, shape, or form? Seems like a kind of lame complaint, seeing as pollution is everywhere. And the rest of the year, it's perfectly temperate. The heat? If you came in the summer, that's the one time it's kinda uncomfortable, but a California summer is nowhere near as bad as summers most other places in the US. Sure, everyone just talks about their careers and their 'projects' out here but it goes with the territory. How "shallow" it was? There are shallow people everywhere.
